Recycled Water Bottles – How to Make a Flower Mobile

I saw a site from England last year, Fabulously {Green}, and they created beautiful art out of recycled water bottles. I thought I could duplicate their idea, but wow, it’s time consuming. Do you know how many empty water bottles you need for one of these?

Well, months later I finished it, and even later, I’m finally posting about it.

My daughter loves it and wants me to make her another one, she wants one on either side of their bed. She’s promised to save the bottles and cut the bottoms off, which will save me some time.

The original artist sanded each small petal, I didn’t take the time to do that. So they look a little ‘rough around the edges’ (literally), but I think it looks pretty cool.

Ok, down to the nitty gritty…

Collect water bottles, we don’t use them so I recruited friends, family & neighbours to save theirs for me.

Cut the bottom off leaving about a 1/2 inch lip.

Bottom-uncut

Cut out 3 triangles, using the ridges in the bottom to create a ‘petal’ shape. On some of them I cut it so there were 5 petals. If you want, you can sand the edges to get a cleaner look.

Spray paint white an 8″ plastic circle (I think it was for needlepoint?), and use fishing line so the line the petals are on is almost invisible. Tie 3 lengths for the hanger and add line between each length in the circle so it’s very full. I have 13 lengths, 9 on the white ring, 3 on the middle lines and one coming from the top hanger.

Use a small white ring for the top of the mobile, to hook it to the support.

Use hot glue to attach the petals to the fishing line. I glued quite a few onto each line, about 4-5 inches apart. Vary the length of the line, it looks better than when they are all one length.

I think it looks pretty cool…but do you know how hard it is taking a photo of clear objects? I had to hang a dark sheet over the window to get a better picture.

Have you ever spent months on one project? What was it you created?

  1. This is a great project for water bottles. We don’t use them any more either so will have to find a source for them … perhaps I need to become a blue box picker :)

  2. So cute!! I’ve been looking at mobiles to hang in the trees – just to get some light reflecting. These would be perfect.

  3. I LOVE it!! It’s quite whimsical :) My son would enjoy something like this so I think I will start saving our water bottles and make this. Thanks for sharing and thank you for your kind words on my blog. It’s so great to have you back.

    Love and hugs!

  4. So nice to see you again Debbie. You are going to love your new site, congrats!

    • Thanks so much, Debbie! So far…not loving it that much, so much to learn! It’s so different than blogger and I’m doing it all myself. Sometimes I think I should have hired someone to set it up for me. Oh well, eventually I’ll have all the bugs out. :)
